Professor Cheng Kai-ming

Professor Kai-ming Cheng is Chair Professor of Education at the University of Hong Kong.He was Dean of Education, Pro-Vice- Chancellor and, until recently, Senior Advisor to the Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Trained as a mathematician, he was a school teacher and a principal before he pursued doctoral study at the London Institute of Education.He taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Education as Visiting Professor from 1996-2006. His current attention has been on the fundamental changes in society and their challenges to education, and therefore the attention to learning as the core business of education. He has undertaken various projects related to reforms, policy-making, legislation and institutional evaluation in many countries across continents.

He has been consultant with the World Bank, Asian Development Bank, UNESCO and UNICEF.He plays advisor to institutions in Japan, China and Russia on fundraising and internationalization. Most recently, he has been appointed to the National Advisory Committee on Curriculum Reform in China, and also members of the Advisory Committees on Education Policies in Shanghai and Guangdong. He is co-convenor of the interdisciplinary Strategic Research Theme on Sciences of Learning at HKU.Locally he is a member of the Education Commission and was instrumental in the on-going comprehensive reform which started 1999.
